For Matty
Characters:
Sam – Main police detective
Charlie – Suicide negotiator
Rachel – Caleb’s Girlfriend
“Matty” – Caleb’s Best friend
Oliver – Matty’s Twin brother
Marlene – Police detective
Caleb – Suicide threat
Sam:
Caleb has been standing on that ledge for 16 hours now, it makes you start to wonder what is going through that head of his. Caleb Whitefield was his name and he was so very young, I would estimate no older than 18. He had big dark blue eyes that looked so tainted, I imagined to myself that he had seen something he shouldn’t have and it had shattered his innocent wall of naive beliefs. Whatever did happen to this kid, it must have been beyond traumatizing. I can’t imagine what would force me to come to the conclusion that my life wasn’t worth living anymore. It hurts me just thinking about him going through something like that.
*Marlene Enters Hotel Room where police are camped out*
Sam:
Hey Mar what do you have for me?
Marlene:
I think you will be very pleased mam, I not only brought you some vital information, but also an almost as vital Boston crème doughnut along with 2 coffees, 1 crème 2 sugars.
Sam:
You’re the best Mar how do you remember this stuff?
Marlene:
A good detective never reveals her secrets?
*Marlene grabs her collar and covers her mouth*
*Sam giggles*
Sam:
Okay, okay so about this vital information?
Marlene:
Right, sorry I got a little off topic, mam.
Sam:
Don’t apologize I could use a good laugh after the days we have been having. To be fair I think we all need a break.
Marlene:
I agree 100% and more, mam
*Sam nods*
Marlene:
Alright, so this kid has been through a lot, we have found out that he has been in and out of foster home’s since he was 5 and his mom over dosed, the father is unknown. Some of the homes have been stable, others not so much. Caleb has been here in a nice Seattle home for almost 18 months. He is a senior in high school, and has a job at old navy part time. We discovered he has a nice friend group, and even a girlfriend of 7 months. She is headed here right now, but we have taken precautions and she has agreed to not talk to him until we say it’s a good time. The team also has his closest friends, and foster family down at the station to be transported here at any time.
Sam:
Thank you, let me know is you find anything else that might lead to why he is on that ledge
*Sam points to ledge and sighs*
Marlene:
Will do, mam.
*Marlene Exits Room*
Sam:
*whispers into her walkie talkie*
Charlie, got any results yet?
*Charlie lightly steps through the door and next to Sam’s table*
Charlie:
Mam, he doesn’t seem to want to communicate to anyone. All he will do is stare at his worn out converse and occasionally mumble “It’s all my fault”. When I ask him what’s his fault, he won’t respond but once I think he whispered “everything”. It is such a shame I think I could really help, but he won’t take it.
Sam:
*mumbles to herself*
Hmm, this is proving to be quite the mystery.
*states to Charlie*
Okay, thank you. All you can do is try, right?
Charlie:
Yes, mam.
Sam:
Good, so keep trying.
*Charlie re-enters Caleb’s room, slowly closing the door*
*Marlene Enters the room with 2 other officers and a pretty girl*
Marlene:
Mam, this is Rachel she is Caleb’s girlfriend.
*In a hushed tone*
She is still a bit on edge and emotionally unstable, just as a fair warning.
*Whispers into Marlene’s ear*
Sam:
Thank you.
*Marlene smiles as a reply*
*Sam smiles back, then turns towards Rachel*
Sam:
Hello, Rachel I know you must not feel very up to talking to a bunch of random cops, but anything could help us at this point. So, if would you please follow me to this side bed and answer a few question we have.
*Sam slightly smiles to Rachel*
*Rachel doesn’t smile back*
Rachel:
*In a weak voice*
Of course, anything to help
*chokes on his name*
Ca--
*sighs*
Him.
Sam:
Thank you, we appreciate it. So, is there anything that happened recently that might have upset Caleb?
Rachel:
Um, yeah. Well his life wasn’t that great and he was struggling with himself and his purpose. But then, last Friday.
*Holds back tears*
We were out driving. By we, I mean myself, Him, Oliver, and his twin brother Matty. Oh, Matty.
*makes a face as if she has eaten something sour by saying his name*
Anyway, we were driving to go meet up with some other friends at drive-in. When we were driving across Maple and Lincoln a small car came speeding out of nowhere. I don’t remember much but they told us the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel after a long day at work, and her foot was stuck on the gas pedal. She didn’t survive, but luckily Oliver, and I were in the back and buckled in so we both left without a scratch. But, Matty was in the passenger seat and he died on impact after his umm neck it snapped forward. Caleb, was left with only a concussion and fractured wrist. Even though it wasn’t his fault, the police on sight found some alcohol in Caleb’s system but it wasn’t enough to charge him with anything. I knew Caleb was blaming himself, and he thought if he had a clearer head maybe he could have gotten out of the way and Matty would still be here. I never thought he would-
*voice cuts out and Rachel seems lost in her thoughts them begins to cry*
*Sam stands up and moves had across Rachel’s shoulders and whispers to her*
Sam:
Thank you, and I’m so sorry truly I am.
*to Marlene*
Sam:
Go get Charlie I know what happened
Marlene:
Yes, mam.
*Charlie enters the room*
Charlie:
What is it?
*Sam explains why Caleb feels guilty and what happened Friday night*
*Charlie exits*
*Shouting from within Caleb’s room*
*Sam Enters*
Caleb:
Shut up, Shut up! You have no idea what you are talking about! Just go away!
*Rachel bursts into room sobbing*
Rachel:
Caleb! Baby please, I love you. Don’t do this, this isn’t a solution. Matty’s death isn’t your fault!
Caleb:
Rachel, what are you doing here? Never mind, I love you too. But, this is the only solution I can’t deal with the guilt it’s too much.
Rachel:
You have nothing to be guilty for. That woman fell asleep she was speeding. You couldn’t have stopped this. No one could have.
Caleb:
What are you talking about? It’s all my fault. I had alcohol in my system.
Rachel:
The police ruled it out as the cause! None of this is your fault, baby please Caleb you have to believe me! Please believe me.
Caleb:
Okay. I believe you. I love you more than anything, I trust you.
*Caleb steps off ledge*
*Rachel begins to run towards him*
*But, before she gets there Oliver comes running through the door*
Oliver:
No, you don’t deserve to live when he is dead.
*Oliver runs into Caleb and grabs onto him knocking him off the ledge and they fall down together*
Oliver:
*On the way down screams*
For Matty.
